Two-time cancer survivor Diana Davis is a senior trainer at the Pro Sports Club in Bellevue, which started carrying Athena at her urging.
“If I had to ask ‘Why me?,’ I would also have to ask, ‘Why would I get this beautiful little boy?.’ I try not to get on the negative side. You realize what’s important.
Don’t get me wrong: The first time I went through cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1994, I was very frightened. I had a brand new baby. I wanted to live.
The second time, five years later when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had to dig way down and pull out that attitude; that survivor instinct. I was scared. I went home by myself and I worried about every ache and pain.
But the longer you go, the fears are not right in front of your face like they used to be. And when that happens, you really do see the mountains. You do see the sun.
My husband and son gave me a reason to be a positive person and know that tomorrow will come.
You only leave the world with one thing, and that’s relationships. When I see somebody, I try to say something positive so they feel better. To give them hope and inspiration.
So when I see someone carrying a bottle of Athena, I always say something. And people want to talk about their mother or their grandmother or even themselves. It’s a way to connect with someone.
Look how many friends I have made, look how many doors that have opened because of cancer. And I’ve been able to walk through them.”
