Water is critical to good health
Water is one of the most important nutrients your body needs to be healthy. It is an essential element of our major organs and enables a range of vital body functions. Water consumption alleviates fatigue, improves skin, reduces stress, assists digestion, and decreases false hunger sensations. It is also associated with preventing illnesses, including cancer.

In the human body, water:

  • Moistens lungs and lubricates joints
  • Protects and cushions tissues and vital organs
  • Converts food to energy
  • Carries nutrients and oxygen into the body
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Metabolizes fat and carries away body wastes

Your body needs hydration
General dietary guidelines recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, although individual needs may vary depending on weight and activity level. In the United States, only about 25 percent of adults meet the dietary guidelines for hydration. (1)

Even mild dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as three percent. Dehydration is often mistaken for hunger. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for nearly 100 percent of dieters, according to a University of Washington study. (2)

A mere two percent drop in body water can affect short-term memory, interfere with basic math, and create difficulty focusing on a computer screen or a printed page.(3)

According to the American Cancer Society, drinking water has been associated with reduced rates of certain cancers.

How much water do you need?
Water needs vary from person to person, depending on weight and activity level. To determine how much water you should drink daily use a hydration calculator.
